Manage your budget and services using the Self-Direction option
The Self-Direction program is exactly what it sounds like. It allows people approved for OPWDD services full control and flexibility in arranging for support.
You’ll need an agency, known as a Fiscal Intermediary, to process submissions and funding. You’ll also need a broker to represent you, help you create your budget, and track your spending so you don’t exceed the limit. Your broker may also recommend community classes and resources.
Note: This option is instead of traditional services, where the agency undertakes the complete burden of paperwork and finding appropriate workers and programs.

I’m an independent broker, but everyone thinks I’m part of Hamaspik because I’m there so often! When I’m asked if I work there, I say I do, but without a desk. I feel like a part of the family because by now 120 of my clients are under Hamaspik of King’s County’s Self Direction program. Hamaspik of Kings County is unique. Mr Wertheimer and the entire team work with heart. It’s not just a business or a job, it’s never all about the money—if it’s best for the individual, they’ll do it even if they lose money.
Anytime I need something from Hamaspik, I know they’ll help me get the job done. I can tell parents, “Sure, I’ll take care of it today,” knowing that Hamaspiks FI department will be there for me anytime.
“Sometimes it feels like it’s all technical, but when we see that our wheelchair-bound client with developmental disabilities is keeping house and attending college, we know 'I'm doing something great', and that makes us excited to continue.
