Early Intervention Milestones

Full-service agency from birth to three years

Early needs are often urgent needs

The responsibility of caring for a helpless newborn can be overwhelming for any parent. When a baby is preterm or born with other complex medical needs, it's particularly stressful.

Parents often need help weaning an infant off a feeding tube and ensuring they can eat without choking. It’s also common for medically fragile children to present with low muscle tone and other speech, motor, and cognitive delays. If your baby’s development is worrying you, reach out for an evaluation.

Who is eligible?

Participants must meet these criteria to apply for this service via Hamaspik of Kings County:

  • Live in NYC or Nassau County
  • Ages: birth - 3

  • Have an intellectual or developmental delay in at least two areas, or are medically fragile

"When my son needed to be intubated, the service coordinator we were assigned was terrific. She took care of everything — and after getting me all services I was eligible for, she tapped into other resources I could benefit from, like getting me a nursing aide. She took care of all the paperwork, and I was gratified to see that the therapy helped my son hit the milestones we were aiming for."

Therapeutic modalities and services to address a range of delay

Feeding therapy

It's frustrating when children are unable to safely keep food down. A feeding therapist will help with oral motor, sucking, and eating difficulties.

Vision therapy

When a child has a visual processing disorder or visual impairment, vision therapy can help them navigate their environment and teach them ways to compensate.

Occupational therapy

Weak motor skills can prevent a child from playing, and inhibit normal childhood exploration.
An occupational therapist will work on fine motor skills so the child can reach developmental milestones.

Physical therapy

When a child is not hitting milestones, a physical therapist will work to develop gross motor skills like rolling over, sitting, and walking.

Speech therapy

A child who is nonverbal is a frustrated child.
A speech therapist facilitates language skills, allowing them to express themselves and understand others.

Special instruction

When a young child is delayed in one or more areas, a special instruction therapist can work on improving developmental, pre-educational and cognitive skills.

Social
work

A social worker will help parents navigate and access other resources and services they can benefit from.

ABA
therapy

Children with ASD can benefit from a behavior modification plan. An ABA therapist teaches and improves skills with positive reinforcement strategies.

Not just any therapists

Our recruitment team is as selective as you are when it comes to hiring someone to work with your child. They focus on sourcing therapists who have a track record of success with children who present with severe delays. When you open your door to your child’s therapist, you’ll sense the empathy and expertise that a true professional projects, and you’ll feel relieved that your little one is in good hands.

You are your child’s
best advocate

As the parent or caregiver, you are most invested and best positioned to be your child’s ideal supporter. Your child’s therapists are specifically trained to train you — giving you the knowledge and ability to effectively work toward your child’s goals between sessions. It’s empowering to have the skills to improve your child’s functioning.

Shaina’s grateful
mother shares

“My daughter Shaina was unfortunately diagnosed with unique genetic disorders that affected all areas of childhood development. Immediately upon contacting Milestones, I was set up with a service coordinator. She first put me in touch with Pillar support who provided much-needed emotional and material help with handling my daughter’s diagnosis.

My service coordinator made a referral to HCBS for ages 0-3, and Shaina was evaluated very soon after the referral. While waiting for approval I received tips and advice so that I could begin helping my daughter right away.

It is now two years later, and I’m glad to report that Shaina is thriving due to the consistent occupational, physical, and speech therapies she is receiving, as well as others. She has gained weight, is talking and walking, and although she still has lots more catching up to do, we are so grateful for the Early Intervention we received that got her to this point.”

“We believe in stepping in earlier rather than later, so our children are better equipped to move on to their school years with the backbone they get from Early Intervention.”
